Japan’s BSS Harnesses Grass Valley Technology for Enhanced Programming

Hillsboro, Ore., March 31, 2014 —Broadcasting System of San-in, BSS TV, a commercial broadcaster in the San-in region of Japan, is combining business flexibility, operational excellence, and outstanding image performance with new, fully integrated broadcast solutions from Grass Valley®. BSS implemented an LDX Compact Premiere advanced imaging camera for its small news studio, as well as three K2 Summit® media servers, a Concerto™ multi- & mixed-format routing switcher, five Jupiter™ routing switcher control solutions, five EDIUS® multiformat nonlinear video editing software solutions, and K2 SAN storage for its news operation. Together, this new end-to-end suite of products will enable BSS to quickly and efficiently deliver news, weather, and other timely information to viewers in the Shimane and Tottori areas of Japan.

BSS has a rich history in broadcast. It began as a radio broadcaster in 1954 and expanded its business to the television market in 1959. In looking for a camera upgrade, the broadcaster met with Grass Valley at Japan’s International Broadcast Equipment Exhibition (InterBEE), in November 2013, and received a hands-on demonstration of the LDX Compact camera series.

“We’ve been using Grass Valley’s EDIUS software for many years and have been very pleased with it, so when it came time to upgrade our camera system, it made absolute sense for us to test the LDX camera at InterBEE,” explained Mr. Akiyama, Technical Division Manager at BSS. “We were immediately impressed with the excellent image quality and the compact body of the camera.”

The LDX Compact offers the same image performance and all of the control features of the LDX Series cameras in a smaller physical package—with advanced imaging, processing, and performance. The powerful K2 Summit media server delivers a 24/7/365 file-based infrastructure and guarantees a reliable workflow. The Concerto routing switcher enables easy configuration and expansion for a fast and efficient performance. The Jupiter control solution is both a hardware and software solution that provides full management of all devices with the touch of a button. It delivers a flexible and expandable distributed architecture and handles everything from small production or dubbing operations to very large facilities.

“We’re excited that BSS has chosen Grass Valley solutions for its newsroom upgrade and that we were able to provide such a detailed demonstration of our LDX Compact at the InterBEE show,” said Stephen Wong, Senior Vice President of Asia Pacific, Grass Valley. “We designed our entire LDX line with power, speed, and flexibility in mind so broadcasters of all sizes can take advantage of its powerful capabilities and stellar image quality.”
